On an early spring morning, the life of 22-year-old Logan Federico was tragically cut short in what police have described as a senseless act of violence. A college student from Waxhaw, North Carolina, with aspirations of becoming a teacher, Logan was in Columbia, South Carolina, visiting friends on May 3, 2025. After a night out, she and her friends returned to the home on Cypress Street in the early hours, before 3 a.m.
Later that morning, at about 11:15 a.m., her friends made a devastating discovery, finding Logan deceased inside the residence. An autopsy would later confirm she died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, and her death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into her death quickly pointed to a suspect with a lengthy criminal history. Authorities identified 30-year-old Alexander Dickey as the man responsible for Logan's death. According to the Columbia Police Department, the incident began with a burglary at a neighboring home on Cypress Street. Investigators believe Dickey broke into that first residence and stole several items, including a firearm and car keys. He then allegedly forced his way into the home where Logan was staying. Inside, it is believed he stole a wallet containing credit and debit cards before entering the room where Logan was and fatally shooting her. Police have emphasized that Logan was not an intended target but a true and helpless victim of a random home invasion.
Following the shooting, Dickey allegedly fled in a stolen vehicle and embarked on what law enforcement described as a 'shopping spree,' using the stolen cards in Lexington and Saluda counties. His escape was thwarted when the stolen vehicle broke down. After arranging for the car to be towed, Dickey's attempts to flee continued. He reportedly stole a second vehicle, which he soon crashed. He then ran to a nearby unoccupied home, forced his way inside, and barricaded himself. As law enforcement surrounded the residence, a fire broke out inside. Officers were able to pull Dickey through a window and take him into custody.
Alexander Dickey, who has a criminal history dating back to 2014 with nearly 40 prior charges, now faces a litany of new accusations, including murder, burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and financial transaction card theft. He has appeared in court and was denied bond. Logan's father, Stephen Federico, has been a vocal advocate for his daughter, questioning how a man with such an extensive criminal record was free to commit such a heinous crime. He and Logan's family and friends remember her as a vibrant, fun-loving young woman with a big heart who was a devoted fan of Taylor Swift.
