In the autumn of 2019, the life of 24-year-old Justin Glenn was tragically cut short by an act of gun violence in Columbia, South Carolina. On the late evening of Thursday, October 3, 2019, Richland County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a shooting on Ballenton Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered three individuals who had been shot. Two of the victims, Justin Glenn and 47-year-old Christine Anne Hayes, were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
A third victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led authorities to a suspect. The Richland County Sheriff's Department identified 45-year-old Demetrick Doctor as the individual wanted in connection with the shooting and issued warrants for his arrest on two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Investigators also sought his 46-year-old brother, Christopher Doctor, for questioning. A public appeal was made for information on Demetrick Doctor's whereabouts, cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Just two days after the fatal shooting, on the evening of Saturday, October 5, Demetrick Doctor was apprehended without incident by the Richland County Sheriff's Department Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service. He was subsequently transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. In April 2022, a Richland County jury found Demetrick Doctor, then 49, guilty of two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Testimony during the trial revealed that an encounter between Doctor and Justin Glenn on the evening of October 2, 2019, preceded the deadly ambush the following day. The court heard that Doctor returned to the location on Ballenton Road and opened fire with two different shotguns and a pistol, killing Glenn and Hayes and severely injuring the third victim, who was blinded for life. Following the guilty verdict, a judge sentenced Demetrick Doctor to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
