A bright Sunday morning in Columbia, South Carolina, turned tragic for 50-year-old Jose Martinez, a male resident of the city. On January 6, 2019, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Martinez was at an Exxon gas station located on the 9400 block of Wilson Boulevard, a street he also called home. It was there that he was shot in the upper body, sustaining a fatal injury. Despite being wounded, Martinez managed to either walk or drive to a nearby lot where he was discovered by emergency medical services.
He was then transported to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at about 11:45 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting, led by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, quickly identified two suspects. Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the confrontation, which authorities later described as a conspired robbery. Within days, the investigation led to the identification of 17-year-old Hassan Talib Reynolds and 22-year-old David Earl Caughman as the individuals involved. Warrants for Reynolds' arrest were issued on January 14, 2019, on charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Following the issuance of the warrants, law enforcement tracked Reynolds to Greensboro, North Carolina. On January 16, 2019, after a stakeout at the Summit Village Apartments, U.S. Marshals, in collaboration with other agencies, apprehended the teenage fugitive. A gun was recovered from the apartment where he was found. Reynolds was subsequently held at the Guilford County Detention Center to await extradition back to South Carolina. His alleged accomplice, David Earl Caughman, was arrested two days after the shooting and charged with accessory after the fact of murder. He was booked into the Richland County Detention Center.
