In a heart-wrenching turn of events in Columbia, South Carolina, a family was shattered by a tragic accident that led to a devastating conclusion. On September 6, 2017, 38-year-old Keon Myers, a male, experienced an unimaginable horror when his two-year-old son, Kyree, found a loaded handgun in their home and accidentally shot himself. The child's mother immediately called 911 for help.
When Columbia police officers arrived at the residence around 11 a.m., they were met with a scene of
profound grief and escalating crisis. They found Keon Myers holding a gun and threatening to take his own life, distraught over the mortal injury to his young son. Despite the officers' attempts to de-escalate the situation and persuade him to drop the weapon, the grief-stricken father ultimately turned the gun on himself, firing a single fatal shot to his head.
Both Keon and his son Kyree were rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, both were pronounced dead. The Richland County Coroner later confirmed that both father and son died from single gunshot wounds to the head. The Columbia Police Department, in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, investigated the incident to determine the origins of the firearm.
