In the early hours of a January morning in Columbia, South Carolina, a dispute shattered the quiet of a residential street, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Nineteen-year-old Khalil Cook, a male, was killed on January 19, 2018, following a violent altercation in the front yard of his home on Gale River Road. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m., when a fight broke out between Cook and an acquaintance.
The confrontation escalated, resulting in Cook's death at the scene, where he was pronounced deceased by emergency medical services.
The investigation into the death quickly led to a suspect. Louis Corbett, 20 years old at the time, was identified as the individual involved in the altercation with Cook. In a surprising turn of events, Corbett returned to the scene of the crime approximately two hours after the incident and was promptly arrested by Richland County Sheriff's deputies. Investigators believe the fatal dispute was connected to drugs.
Following his arrest, Louis Corbett was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was subsequently transported to the Richland County Detention Center. Khalil Anwar Cook, born on May 21, 1998, was remembered by his family and friends. His funeral services were held at the Francis Burns United Methodist Church, and he was laid to rest at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
