In the early morning hours of September 30, 2015, a call about a suspicious person in the parking lot of the Richland Mall in Columbia, South Carolina, set in motion a tragic chain of events. Forest Acres Police Officer Gregory Thomas Alia, a 32-year-old male and a seven-year veteran of the force, responded to the call alongside two other officers.
What began as a routine check would end in a fatal confrontation that would deeply impact the community.
The officers located the suspicious man, later identified as 34-year-old Jarvis Hall, inside a van. When they attempted to speak with him, Hall became uncooperative and suddenly fled on foot, running into the mall. Officer Alia pursued Hall into the shopping center. A struggle ensued between the two, during which Hall produced a stolen. 40 caliber handgun and fatally shot Officer Alia. The officer, a husband and a new father to a 6-month-old son, was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Jarvis Hall was apprehended at the scene shortly after the shooting. He was found to be armed with both the handgun and a knife. The subsequent investigation revealed the handgun had been stolen. Hall was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He had a prior criminal record, including previous arrests where he was found carrying multiple weapons.
On May 9, 2017, Jarvis Hall pleaded guilty to the murder of Officer Gregory Alia. In an emotionally charged courtroom, where family members of the fallen officer shared their grief and pain, Hall was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. By pleading guilty, Hall avoided a potential death penalty trial. During the sentencing, Hall apologized to the Alia family for his actions. The tragic death of Officer Alia left a lasting scar on the Forest Acres community and his department, who remembered him as a dedicated officer and a selfless servant.
