In the late summer of 2019, the life of 15-year-old Jalen Qadir Islam was tragically cut short on the streets of Columbia, South Carolina. On the evening of August 12, police were alerted to gunfire in the 2100 block of Slighs Avenue. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered a car that had crashed into a tree. Inside the vehicle, they found Jalen suffering from what initially appeared to be multiple injuries from the crash.
However, upon the arrival of paramedics, it was discovered that the young man had sustained a gunshot wound to the torso, which was later determined to be the cause of his death. The vehicle Jalen had been driving was reported stolen.
Investigations into Jalen's death quickly pointed to a homicide, prompting a search for those responsible. Nearly three months later, on November 1, 2019, the Columbia Police Department announced an arrest in the case. A 15-year-old male, an acquaintance of Jalen's, was taken into custody. Investigators believe that a dispute between the two teenagers escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Due to his status as a minor, the suspect's name was not publicly released.
The unnamed suspect was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Following his arrest, he was housed in the juvenile section of the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. The case was petitioned to the family court, where a hearing would be held to determine if the juvenile suspect would be tried as an adult for the killing of Jalen Qadir Islam. His father remembered him as a 'very special individual' who, despite having his ups and downs, did not deserve such a fate. Jalen was a student in the Richland County school system where he was said to have had an impact on many of his peers. He had a love for basketball, music, and spending time with his family and friends.
