In late December 2021, the life of 26-year-old Terrell Sims came to a tragic end in Columbia, South Carolina. The mother of his one-year-old child, Taylor Wardlaw, then 29, reported him missing on December 22nd. She took to social media, posting pictures of Terrell and making emotional pleas for the community's help in finding him. Wardlaw even organized a search party, portraying herself as a frantic and devoted girlfriend desperate for his safe return.
All the while, she harbored a dark secret.
Behind the facade of a concerned partner, a grim reality was hidden. Investigators worked tirelessly, following leads in search of the missing man. Their efforts led them to a creek off Monticello Road on January 5, 2022, where they discovered Terrell Sims's body. An autopsy later confirmed he had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly pivoted, and the evidence began to point toward the very person who had initiated the search.
The day after his body was found, Taylor Wardlaw was arrested by the Columbia Police Department and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Investigators determined that she had fatally shot Sims. Later, a second individual, 30-year-old Eddie Brown, was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact for his role in helping to dispose of the body. According to Terrell's family, he had been trying to end his relationship with Wardlaw, a decision she seemingly could not accept.
In March 2024, just as her trial was about to commence, Taylor Wardlaw, then 31, accepted a plea deal. She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. As a result of her plea, the charge of possession of a weapon during a violent crime was dropped. A judge sentenced her to 20 years in prison for the killing of Terrell Sims, who was a father to four children.
