Assistant Jailer Hilton Theodore Smith, a 31-year-old male officer with the Columbia Police Department, lived with his wife May and their children in a small cottage on the grounds of the city jail at 1425 Lincoln Street in Columbia, South Carolina. He had been born on September 1, 1878, in the rural Cedar Creek community of Richland County to Augustus Theodore “Gus” Smith and Bernice Melane Sligh, and as a young adult he made a life of public service, taking on the demanding role of city ja ...
