In the late hours of a Saturday night in Columbia, South Carolina, the life of Joseph Lanard James, a 44-year-old Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On May 12, 2018, just after 11 p.m., deputies were called to the 2000 block of Smith Street, near Shop Road, where they found James with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Despite the efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into his death quickly focused on a suspect
close to home. Three days later, on May 15, 2018, Richland County Sheriff's Department investigators arrested his estranged wife, 38-year-old Rhonda James. She was taken into custody at her home on Smith Street, the same street where Joseph was killed, and charged with his murder. Authorities stated that she was accused of shooting her estranged husband in the upper body.
Following her arrest, Rhonda James was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. It was later revealed that this was not her first encounter with law enforcement regarding domestic issues. Records showed a previous arrest on Christmas Day in 2016 for criminal domestic violence, which resulted in a conviction for third-degree assault and battery. The killing of Joseph Lanard James served as a grim reminder of the potential for domestic disputes to escalate to fatal violence.
