In the early hours of March 13, 2022, the vibrant life of 20-year-old Jamacia Dowling was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at a crowded apartment party in Columbia, South Carolina. A female student at the University of South Carolina, Dowling was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a dispute that erupted at the Greene Crossing Apartments on Pulaski Street.

The chaos began just before 2 a.m. when an argument escalated, leading to multiple individuals brandishing firearms and opening fire within the apartment and its hallways. Amid the turmoil, an officer discovered Dowling in a hallway, conscious but suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The officer rendered aid until paramedics arrived, but despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Four other individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 22, were also wounded in the shooting but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Just days after the shooting, on March 17, 2022, the Columbia Police Department announced the apprehension of 23-year-old Kejuan Boyce, who was subsequently charged with the murder of Jamacia Dowling and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. The investigation continued, and in the following months, two more individuals were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Dennis Williams, 24, was charged with accessory after the fact to murder, accused of witnessing the shooting, firing a weapon at a vehicle in the parking lot, and driving Boyce away from the scene. A third suspect, 23-year-old Trajan Mack, was arrested in June 2022 and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm during the incident.
Authorities believe that an argument at the party was the catalyst for the shooting and that multiple individuals were armed with both handguns and assault-style weapons.
