Sharekia Lamaine Johnson, a 42-year-old Black female, was tragically killed on April 8, 2020, in a double murder-suicide in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The incident, a devastating act of domestic violence, also claimed the life of her 5-year-old son, Paul Johnson Jr.
The perpetrator was identified as Sharekia's husband, Paul Patrick Johnson Sr. He fatally shot both his wife and their young son before turning the gun on himself.
When the York County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene, they discovered Sharekia and her son with fatal gunshot wounds. Paul Patrick Johnson Sr. was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Prior to the tragic event, there were clear signs of danger. Paul Patrick Johnson Sr. had a pending charge for domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. This charge stemmed from a December 2019 incident where he was accused of choking his wife and beating her with a belt, during which he allegedly threatened to end her life. Despite arguments from prosecutors that he posed a threat to his wife and should remain in custody, he was out on bond at the time of the murders. This case brought to light concerns within the legal system regarding the handling of domestic violence cases and the measures in place to protect victims.
