On a tragic day in Rock Hill, South Carolina, 20-year-old Shanijela Shamichael Williams was killed on February 12, 2019. Williams, who was pregnant at the time, was fatally shot in a violent rampage that left several others injured. The man identified as the suspect was Marques Quantez Heath.
The violent spree unfolded on Leach Road, where Heath not only shot Williams but also wounded two other individuals by gunfire and assaulted two more with a hammer.
Following this initial attack, he proceeded to another location on Farlow Street, where he shot and critically injured another woman. Family members and neighbors later confirmed that Williams had been pregnant with Heath's child.
Law enforcement apprehended Heath in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a short vehicle chase. Investigators discovered that Heath had a significant criminal history, which included prior arrests for domestic violence, drug offenses, and illegal firearm possession. Notably, he had been arrested just a month prior for a high and aggravated domestic violence incident against Williams. Despite the severity of that assault, where he reportedly beat her while she was on the ground and threatened to kill her, Heath had been released on bond.
Following his arrest for the deadly rampage, Heath was extradited from North Carolina to face charges in York County. While the immediate motive for the widespread violence was not officially released, the prior domestic violence incident pointed to a tumultuous relationship. After legal proceedings, a sense of justice was finally felt by Williams' loved ones on August 20, 2024, the day a jury convicted Heath for his crimes.
