On a spring afternoon in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the tranquility of a quiet neighborhood was shattered by an act of shocking violence. Barbara Wood Smith Lesslie, a 69-year-old woman, was at her home with her husband, Dr. Robert Lesslie, and two of their grandchildren on April 7, 2021, when a former NFL player, Phillip Adams, forced his way into their residence. In a senseless attack, Adams shot and killed Barbara, her 70-year-old husband, and their grandchildren, Adah, 9, and Noah, 5. The four family members were discovered in a back room of the house.

The tragic event also claimed the lives of two men who were working at the Lesslie home that day. James Lewis, 38, was found shot to death outside, and his colleague, Robert Shook, 38, was also shot and later died from his injuries at a hospital. The community was left reeling from the loss of six lives in a single, inexplicable act of violence. Law enforcement was alerted to the shooting by two 911 calls, one from a man mowing a nearby lawn who heard about twenty gunshots.

Evidence at the scene quickly led investigators to identify Phillip Adams, who lived nearby with his parents, as the suspect. When deputies surrounded his parents' home, they evacuated his parents and attempted to negotiate with Adams. After a standoff, Adams was found dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As the sole perpetrator, no arrests were made in connection with the mass shooting.

In the aftermath, the investigation into a motive for the horrific crime began. It was revealed that Dr. Lesslie had previously treated Adams. Following his death, Adams's brain was examined, and it was discovered that he suffered from an 'unusually severe' case of Stage 2 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. While officials have not definitively stated that CTE was the cause of his actions, it is believed to be a significant contributing factor, with symptoms that can include aggression, impulsivity, and paranoia. The devastating event left a lasting scar on the Rock Hill community and highlighted the potential long-term consequences of head injuries in sports.
