The incident, which unfolded on a basketball court behind an elementary school in Orangeburg, South Carolina, cut short the life of a young father and sent ripples of grief through his community. Grant, a forklift driver at Husqvarna, was a graduate of Orangeburg Wilkinson High School and a devoted father to his two children.
He was known for the constant smile on his face and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
On July 21, 2020, Grant was engaged in a one-on-one basketball game with 25-year-old Rodney Rivers. Witnesses reported that an argument erupted between the two men over the game. Following the verbal altercation, Rivers allegedly left the court, retrieved a handgun, and returned to fatally shoot Grant. Emergency services were called to the scene on Shadow Lawn Drive, and Grant was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office investigated the killing, with Sheriff Leroy Ravenell remarking, 'A man lost his life over a game.”
In the wake of the shooting, investigators quickly identified Rodney Rivers as the suspect. He was arrested and charged with the murder of Tashon Grant. Following his arrest, Rivers was held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
