In the late hours of an autumn night in Burton, South Carolina, the life of 18-year-old DaRhon Brooks was tragically cut short. On the evening of October 23, 2024, Brooks, a male resident of Beaufort, was in a vehicle with two other individuals when they came under gunfire near the intersection of Parris Island Gateway and Trask Parkway. The sudden eruption of violence left them in a desperate situation.
In a frantic effort to save their lives, the driver sped away from the scene,
heading towards Beaufort Memorial Hospital. However, their race for medical help ended in further tragedy. Only about three miles from the site of the shooting, their vehicle crashed in the 800 block of Ribaut Road and became engulfed in flames. When emergency responders arrived, they discovered a scene of devastation. Brooks and another 18-year-old, Ashi Mitchell, had succumbed to their gunshot wounds. A third person in the vehicle was injured and transported to the hospital for treatment.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the double homicide, collecting evidence from the scene of the shooting where at least a dozen evidence markers were placed, indicating the presence of numerous shell casings. Authorities confirmed that the incident was the third time in less than a week that a vehicle had been targeted by gunfire in the area.
Despite the ongoing investigation and pleas to the public for information, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the murders of DaRhon Brooks and Ashi Mitchell. The case remains an open and active investigation, leaving a community to mourn the senseless loss of two young lives and to hope for answers that have yet to come.
