In the summer of 2017, a dispute that began on social media tragically escalated, ending the life of 17-year-old Quantavious 'Quan' Torbit in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A rising senior and basketball player at South Pointe High School, Torbit was at a local park on a Sunday evening in late June when a planned fight between two young women, one of whom was his twin sister, was scheduled to take place following a 'negative post on Facebook'.
As a crowd gathered and the altercation began, the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Amid the chaos, gunshots rang out. Torbit was struck by gunfire and was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center in a private vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 20-year-old woman was also hit by a stray bullet but survived her injuries. In the immediate aftermath, police began an investigation, interviewing numerous people at the scene, though many were reportedly reluctant to provide statements.
The investigation led to the swift arrests of two individuals. Demetric Leon Houze, then 25, was identified as the shooter and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Another man, 19-year-old Timothy Holley, who was identified as Torbit's brother, was charged with discharging a firearm within the city limits. Torbit's mother, who was present and witnessed the shooting, later stated that her sons were attempting to de-escalate the situation before the violence erupted.
In November 2018, Demetric Houze pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. Prosecutors stated that Houze, who was not involved in the initial fight, pulled out a pistol and shot Torbit three times during the melee. The motive for the shooting remained unclear, as there was no known prior conflict between Houze and Torbit. Houze offered his condolences to Torbit's family in court before being sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in the senseless death of the high school student.
