In the spring of 2022, a dispute between two groups of young people in Rock Hill, South Carolina, escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter, claiming the life of 17-year-old Evante Hart. Hart, a Black male, was one of three teenagers who lost their lives on the night of April 26th in a violent shootout on Gist Road, near South Cherry Road. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the devastating consequences of escalating youth violence.
The events of that
Tuesday night unfolded as a pre-existing conflict reached its deadly climax. Hart, along with 16-year-old Kam'ran Brevard, approached a parked vehicle carrying 17-year-old Ahmik Coleman, 16-year-old O'Marian Small, and another teenager. Hart and Brevard allegedly opened fire on the car, instigating a chaotic exchange of gunfire. In the driver's seat, Small was fatally wounded. Coleman, seated in the front passenger seat, sustained a gunshot wound to his hand but managed to return fire, striking both Hart and Brevard.
What followed transformed an already tragic event into what a police detective would later describe as an 'execution.' After the initial volley of shots, Coleman reportedly fled the scene only to return moments later. He is then alleged to have fired additional shots at the wounded Hart and Brevard as they lay on the ground, killing them. The brutal nature of the act underscored the senseless violence that had erupted.
The investigation into the triple homicide led to several arrests. Ahmik Coleman was taken into custody and charged as an adult with two counts of murder. A 16-year-old girl, accused of driving Hart and Brevard to the scene of the confrontation, was also charged with murder. A third suspect, 21-year-old Chris'tavious Caldwell, was later arrested and charged in connection with the killings.
The legal proceedings that followed have been complex. In a significant development, a judge granted Ahmik Coleman immunity from prosecution in the death of Kam'ran Brevard under South Carolina's 'stand your ground' law. However, the judge ruled that this immunity did not extend to the death of Evante Hart, and Coleman still faces murder and weapons charges in his killing.
