On January 2nd, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Legette was lured to a location through the use of a fake Facebook account, a trap that would ultimately lead to his death. The male victim was ambushed and fatally shot, a devastating end to a scheme designed to catch him off guard.
The investigation into the homicide
uncovered a plot involving multiple individuals. Authorities revealed that the shooter, Gerard Smith, had conspired with others to carry out the murder. A key component of their plan was the fake social media profile, which investigators believe was operated by James Crescent from behind bars, where he was serving time for an unrelated offense. This digital deception was the first step in a chain of events that would have fatal consequences for Legette, an involved father of five.
Following an investigation, arrests were made, and the individuals responsible for Brandon Legette's death were brought to justice. Gerard Smith, the man who pulled the trigger, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Another accomplice, Melissa Mosley, who was James Crescent's mother, was also implicated in the crime. Evidence showed that after the murder, Smith went to Mosley's home. She then assisted him in his attempt to escape and helped to hide evidence related to the shooting.
