In the early afternoon of October 3, 2024, a dispute at the Plantation Apartments in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, tragically cut short the life of 67-year-old Shelton Oneil Phyall, a Black / African American male. The Moncks Corner Police Department received reports of gunfire around 12:20 PM and responded to the apartment complex. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Phyall near the playground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the first responders, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Berkeley County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an argument that had escalated into deadly violence. Law enforcement officials worked diligently to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Their efforts led to the swift apprehension of 17-year-old Jovial Price. In connection with the death of Shelton Phyall, Price was arrested and is facing serious charges, including one count of homicide and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Due to the severity of the offense, the teenage suspect is being charged as an adult. Following his arrest, Price was booked into the Hill Finklea Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
The community of Moncks Corner was shaken by this act of violence. Local officials, including the mayor, issued statements condemning the incident and reaffirming their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim.
