Tristan and his 73-year-old grandfather, George Cleveland Stump Sr., had traveled to Columbus County to purchase a 2011 Chevy Camaro they had found on Craigslist. Unfortunately, the transaction turned into a deadly ambush. The Columbus County Sheriff's Office received a call just after 9 p.m. regarding an unresponsive male on the ground.
Upon arrival, deputies found Tristan Lavonne Stavee, who had been shot and was unresponsive, lying outside the vehicle. His grandfather, George Cleveland Stump Sr., was found inside the vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound but still responsive. Tristan was pronounced dead at the scene, while his grandfather was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
The investigation revealed that Tristan and his grandfather were ambushed, robbed, and shot during the attempted purchase. The suspects stole the money and beat and shot both men. The Columbus County Sheriff's Office quickly made progress in the case, arresting two suspects within days of the incident. On December 2, 2020, authorities arrested Mark Anthony Nelson, a 24-year-old male from Tabor City. Nelson was charged with murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was held without bond at the Columbus County Jail.
Two days later, on December 4, 2020, authorities arrested Tamika Shatavia Ford, a 29-year-old female from Tabor City. Ford was charged with murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and failure to appear on a misdemeanor. She received a secured bond of $1,250,500. Both suspects were awaiting their next court dates as the investigation continued.
