In the winter of 2021, a 35-year-old man named Jairus Mickale Byrd lost his life in a fatal shooting in Laurens, South Carolina. The incident, which occurred on January 22, 2021, unfolded on Spring Street and was the culmination of a targeted attack.
On that day, Antone B. Ellis Tremayne Blakely, a known gang member who went by the street name 'Cheeze,' along with several accomplices, went to the apartment where Byrd was staying. They cornered Byrd in a bedroom and assaulted him.
Despite being attacked, Byrd managed to escape the apartment. However, when he returned a short time later to retrieve his belongings, he was met with a barrage of gunfire. Blakely, who had remained inside, opened fire on Byrd as he approached. Other accomplices outside the apartment also began shooting at Byrd as he tried to flee. Struck by multiple bullets, he collapsed in the middle of Spring Street and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The motive behind the brutal killing was traced back over a decade, to when Jairus Byrd had served as a confidential informant for the Laurens Police Department. This past cooperation with law enforcement is believed to be what made him a target. Publicly available Facebook posts from Blakely became key evidence in establishing his motive and his connections to the other individuals involved in the deadly assault.
Following an investigation, Antone B. Ellis Tremayne Blakely was arrested and stood trial for his role in Byrd's death. In April 2023, a Laurens County jury found Blakely, then 30, guilty of murder, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, third-degree assault and battery by mob, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. For these crimes, he was sentenced to a total of 40 years in prison for the murder charge, with additional concurrent sentences for the other convictions.
