In the early morning hours of June 24, 2021, a workplace dispute escalated into a fatal shooting in a West Columbia, South Carolina parking lot, claiming the life of 33-year-old Daniel Demetrius Jones. The incident, which occurred around 7:07 a.m. in the Capitol Square parking lot across from the House of Raeford chicken plant, was the culmination of an ongoing conflict between Jones and his coworker, Trevor Anthony Irvin.
The tension between the two men had been simmering for some time.
Disagreements at the chicken plant where they both worked had already led to Jones and his girlfriend being moved to a different work area from Irvin, who was a line lead. On the day of the shooting, shortly after their night shift ended around 6:30 a.m., a verbal altercation erupted between Irvin and Jones. Witnesses later testified that Irvin had confronted Jones and had been disrespectful towards both him and his girlfriend. The argument grew heated, with Irvin reportedly threatening to harm Jones in the parking lot.
Following the end of their shift, the conflict spilled out into the parking lot across the street. The confrontation continued to a nearby gas station before the fatal shots were fired back in the shopping center parking lot. When West Columbia Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found Jones with multiple gunshot wounds. Although he still had a pulse when they reached him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Irvin was not present when law enforcement initially arrived but later returned to the scene, claiming he had acted in self-defense. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Daniel Jones. During his trial, which took place over a week, Irvin maintained that he was in fear for his life at the time of the shooting. However, after an hour and a half of deliberation, a Lexington County jury convicted Trevor Anthony Irvin, then 30, of murder on June 23, 2023. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison and will not be eligible for parole.
