On a tragic evening in West Columbia, South Carolina, a violent encounter cut short the life of 39-year-old Joel Alfonso Garcia. The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. on March 29th, on Dubbs Avenue, where Garcia and another man were met with gunfire. Both men, residents of West Columbia, sustained gunshot wounds to their lower torsos and were quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
While the second victim, a 49-year-old man, was treated for his injuries and
subsequently released, Garcia’s condition was far more severe. After fighting for his life, he succumbed to his wounds on the following Saturday. An autopsy later confirmed that the single gunshot wound led to the failure of multiple organs, a devastating conclusion that led the Lexington County Coroner to officially rule his death a homicide.
Before his passing, Garcia was able to provide a limited description of his assailants to law enforcement. He reported that two African-American men were responsible for the shooting and robbery. He also noted that they fled the scene in a white, four-door vehicle. However, he was unable to offer a more detailed physical description of the suspects.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department issued a public appeal for assistance in identifying the two men responsible for Joel Garcia's death. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing. To date, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the homicide, and the suspects remain at large. The community is left to mourn the loss of one of its own as authorities continue their search for those responsible for this senseless act of violence.
