Perry James McIntyre, a 49-year-old White male, was tragically killed on July 1, 2021, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. A service technician for Charter Communications, McIntyre was at a residence on Amelia Street performing his duties when he became the victim of a fatal shooting. The events of that day unfolded into a prolonged and violent standoff with law enforcement.
The incident began when Shannon Earl Smith, a 45-year-old resident of the home where McIntyre was working, reportedly
shot and wounded two city water employees who were working near Cleveland Park. Following this initial shooting, Smith retreated into his home, where McIntyre was present. This action initiated a standoff with law enforcement that lasted for several hours. During the tense standoff, Smith also shot and wounded a Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputy and a woman who was also inside the house. Tragically, Perry James McIntyre was shot and killed by Smith during this time.
The lengthy and violent encounter concluded when law enforcement officers shot Shannon Earl Smith. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. As the sole suspect in the series of shootings, Smith's death brought an end to the immediate investigation. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office was tasked with investigating the incident, as multiple local agencies were involved in the standoff. No further arrests were made in connection with the death of Perry James McIntyre, as the man responsible for the violence was deceased.
