In the early morning hours of August 28, 2021, a gathering on Oliver Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina, turned tragic. Leonard Lee Lyles III, a 36-year-old Black/African American man, was standing near the road, engaged in a conversation with another man in front of a house. It was around 4:20 a.m. when the sound of gunshots shattered the predawn quiet. Lyles was struck multiple times in his legs and upper body.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, beginning a harrowing fight for his life.
For five weeks, Leonard Lyles clung to life, but the severity of his injuries proved to be too great. On October 1, 2021, he succumbed to the wounds he sustained in the shooting. His passing left his family devastated and initiated a lengthy homicide investigation by the Spartanburg Police Department. As the months wore on, his family and the community yearned for answers and justice, with his loved ones eventually offering a substantial reward for information that would lead to an arrest in the case.
The breakthrough in the investigation came over a year later. On December 14, 2022, authorities apprehended 30-year-old Felshunti Daquan Clark at a McDonald's on New Cut Road in Spartanburg. Following his arrest, Clark was charged with murder, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. During a subsequent court hearing, his bond was denied. The arrest brought a measure of relief to Lyles's mother, who expressed her gratitude and the family's unwavering resolve to see justice served for her son.
