On the afternoon of Sunday, October 17, 2021, a violent encounter unfolded on the streets of Sumter, South Carolina, claiming the life of Bryan Omega Myers. The 31-year-old Black male was walking along Hannah Street near the Harmony Court Apartments, a route he reportedly took while heading toward a nearby business. Around 3:30 p.m., the quiet of the day was shattered when at least two individuals approached him.
The interaction escalated quickly, leading to gunfire that left Myers lying injured in the roadway as the assailants fled the scene.
Emergency responders and officers from the Sumter Police Department rushed to the area after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found Myers suffering from gunshot wounds but still alive. He was treated immediately at the scene before being transported by ambulance to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that day. The Sumter County Coroner’s Office subsequently notified his family, and an autopsy was scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
In the immediate aftermath, investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Early assessments by the police suggested that the attack was an isolated incident rather than a random act of violence. Authorities appealed to the community for information and searched for the individuals responsible. The investigation eventually led law enforcement to identify two suspects in connection with the homicide. Shyquez Glen Singleton and Jyreek Avontae Tywonne McLeod-Jay were subsequently apprehended and charged with murder for their alleged roles in the shooting death of Myers.
