In the quiet town of Bennettsville, South Carolina, the life of 37-year-old Robert Lee Covington Jr., a male resident, was tragically cut short in a violent act that shook the local community. On the afternoon of December 14, 2021, deputies from the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on Patricia Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Covington deceased inside the home, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The scene was immediately secured, and an intensive homicide investigation was launched.
The initial stages of the investigation were a collaborative effort between the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. As detectives processed the crime scene and gathered evidence, a call for public assistance was made, with Crime Stoppers offering a cash reward for any information that could lead to an arrest. For months, the investigation continued, with law enforcement tirelessly working to piece together the events that led to Covington's death.
The first significant breakthrough in the case came five months later, on May 24, 2022, with the arrest of Adrian Ingram of Bennettsville. Ingram was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and criminal conspiracy. The investigation did not stop there. On June 2, 2022, a second suspect, Larry Debarge Fields of Cheraw, was taken into custody by the Cheraw Police Department. He faced similar charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, criminal conspiracy, as well as burglary and grand larceny.
The pursuit of justice extended beyond the borders of South Carolina. The third and final suspect, Johnnie Ray Marshall Jr., also known as 'Razor,' was apprehended in East Hartford, Connecticut, on June 8, 2022. Marshall was arrested as a fugitive and awaited extradition back to Marlboro County to face charges of murder, burglary, criminal conspiracy, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and grand larceny. The arrests of all three men marked the culmination of a thorough and multi-agency investigation that brought some measure of resolution to a community mourning the loss of one of its own.
