In the summer of 2019, the life of 19-year-old Eric Canty was tragically cut short in Bennettsville, South Carolina. On June 20th, Canty was shot on Sunny Bank Street. He was quickly transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The Bennettsville Police Department, with the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division promptly began an investigation into the shooting.
Their efforts led to the swift arrest of a suspect, Devonte Malachi, on June 21, 2019. Malachi was taken into custody without incident and charged with murder in connection with Eric Canty's death. He was subsequently held at the Marlboro County Detention Center.
Following the arrest, the investigation continued with SLED processing the crime scene. Devonte Malachi faced charges of first-degree murder and weapons violations as the case proceeded through the legal system.
