In the early hours of a Sunday morning, the life of 36-year-old Darvell Smith was brought to a tragic and violent end in Hammond, Indiana. On November 3, 2019, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Smith was discovered in his vehicle in the 2300 block of White Oak Avenue, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his death was officially ruled a homicide by the Lake County coroner's office.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a grim narrative of
familial conflict turned deadly. The perpetrator was identified as Smith's own cousin, 32-year-old Shaun A. Whitelow. The motive for the killing was traced back to a fight that had occurred at a family party the previous night. Although police had been called to the initial altercation, no arrests were made at that time. In the hours that followed, Whitelow stalked his cousin, culminating in what was described as an 'execution-style' shooting as Smith sat in his parked car.
In the wake of the murder, Whitelow reportedly showed no remorse, even attending Smith's funeral and interacting with grieving family members before his eventual arrest. The legal process that followed brought the devastating details of the case to light. In May 2021, Shaun A. Whitelow was convicted of murdering his cousin. The trial highlighted the profound and lasting trauma inflicted upon Smith's children and family. Two months later, in July 2021, a judge sentenced Whitelow to 60 years in prison for the senseless act of violence.
