In June of 2019, a concerned mother's inability to reach her daughter led to the grim discovery of a double homicide in a quiet home in Warrior, Alabama. Cristy Lynn Pickett, a 26-year-old female, and her companion, Tommy Ervin Shyrie, 58, were found deceased inside their residence on Bethel Road. The couple had been shot to death and their bodies lay undiscovered for several days before Pickett's mother, worried after not hearing from her, went to the home.
When no one answered her knocks, she contacted the authorities.
Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies made a welfare check and entered the home to find a tragic scene. Pickett was found in the hallway, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Shyrie was discovered in a bedroom, having been shot in the face. Investigators determined that he had seemingly tried to hide beside a bed in his final moments. The couple was known in their neighborhood as friendly people, making the violent nature of their deaths all the more shocking to those who knew them.
The investigation into the killings soon focused on a man named Terrence Jermaine Holder, who was described as a casual acquaintance of the victims. Pickett and Shyrie had reportedly been allowing Holder and his girlfriend, who were homeless, to stay with them at their residence. Evidence gathered by detectives led them to identify Holder as the primary suspect. During the course of the investigation, Holder provided conflicting stories and attempted to implicate two other individuals, though he eventually confessed to the murders.
Terrence Jermaine Holder, then 41, was arrested and charged with capital murder in the deaths of Cristy Lynn Pickett and Tommy Ervin Shyrie. In June 2022, a jury found Holder guilty of capital murder. Following his conviction, the jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
