In the early morning hours of January 7, 2023, Renata Nata Lewis, a 42-year-old Black female, was in her bed inside her home on Bond Drive in the Martin Luther King Jr. neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana. At approximately 2:40 a.m., gunfire erupted outside, and a stray bullet penetrated her residence, striking and killing her. Law enforcement officials believe that Lewis was not the intended target of the shooting.
The Caddo Parish Coroner's office officially identified Lewis and an autopsy was ordered to determine the precise cause of death. Her death was classified as the second homicide in Shreveport for that year. The Shreveport Police Department launched an investigation into the senseless act of violence that took the life of an innocent woman in the sanctity of her own home.
