On April 12, 2018, the life of 27-year-old Rannita Williams, a mother of three, was tragically cut short in her Shreveport, Louisiana, home. Her ex-boyfriend, 36-year-old Johnathan Robinson, held her hostage before fatally shooting her. The harrowing event unfolded partially on Facebook Live, as Williams began broadcasting in the moments leading up to her death.
Robinson had forced his way into the home where Williams was with her mother and brother. He was armed and held them at gunpoint. During the terrifying ordeal, Robinson demanded that Williams apologize on the livestream to his current girlfriend for previous remarks she had made. In the video, Robinson can be heard asking, “You wanna be famous? I’m gonna make you famous,” before opening fire. Williams pleaded with him, crying out, 'Stop, Johnathan,' as the shots were fired.
Following the shooting, Robinson engaged in an approximately 80 to 90-minute standoff with the nearly 40 law enforcement officers who had rushed to the scene. During the standoff, Robinson exchanged gunfire with the police, resulting in one officer being shot in the wrist. After his eventual surrender, Williams was found inside the house and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Johnathan Robinson was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. The plea agreement spared him the death penalty, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As part of the agreement, he also received a concurrent 100-year sentence for shooting at the police officers. During the court proceedings, Robinson apologized to Williams's mother, who, in a powerful moment of grace, told him she forgave him.
