On an April evening in Rock Hill, South Carolina, a dispute between two groups of teenagers escalated into a tragic and fatal shootout. The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2022, on Gist Road, resulted in the deaths of three young men, including 16-year-old Kam’ran Brevard. The male victim and 17-year-old Evanta Hart approached a parked vehicle and began firing into it.
Inside the car was 16-year-old Omarian Small, who was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene.
Ahmik Coleman, a 17-year-old passenger in the parked car, was wounded in the hand during the initial volley of shots. Despite his injury, he returned fire, hitting both Brevard and Hart. According to police, Coleman then fled the scene, only to return moments later. He is said to have found Brevard and Hart lying wounded in the street and proceeded to shoot them again, inflicting the fatal injuries. This violent encounter, which police described as the result of an ongoing dispute, left a quiet residential street as the scene of a triple homicide.
In the aftermath of the shooting, several arrests were made. Ahmik Coleman was taken into custody and charged as an adult with two counts of murder for the deaths of Brevard and Hart. A 16-year-old girl was also charged with murder, accused of driving Brevard and Hart to the location of the shooting. A third suspect, 21-year-old Chris'tavious Caldwell, was later arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of Omarian Small.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some resolution to the case. In a significant turn, a judge granted Ahmik Coleman immunity from prosecution in the death of Kam'ran Brevard under South Carolina's 'stand your ground' law. However, he did not receive immunity for the death of Evanta Hart and later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in juvenile court for his death. Chris'tavious Caldwell pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder, receiving a 15-year prison sentence. The case against the teenage girl who allegedly drove the shooters to the scene remains pending in Family Court.
