In a tragic turn of events on a warm August night in Rock Hill, South Carolina, 30-year-old Anthony D'Mond Hart, a male resident of the city, was fatally shot. On the evening of August 9, 2015, while standing in the front yard of a relative's home on Frank Street, Hart was struck by gunfire. Police officers who were nearby responding to an unrelated call heard between six and ten gunshots and the sound of a vehicle speeding away from the scene at approximately 11:15 p.m.
They discovered Hart lying face down in the grass, bleeding from a head wound. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Hart's death revealed a heartbreaking case of mistaken identity rooted in a desire for revenge. Just a week prior, on August 2, a man named Quinterius Miller had been involved in a fight in the same neighborhood and was knocked unconscious. Anthony Hart and his father, who witnessed the altercation, intervened to help Miller, potentially saving his life. In an act of retaliatory violence, Miller returned to the area on August 9th intending to shoot the individual he had fought with. However, he went to the wrong house and instead shot and killed Hart, the very man who had come to his aid.
The investigation led to the arrest of 17-year-old Quinterius Zy'Quan Miller, who was charged with murder. Two other young men were also implicated in the crime. Faubion Cadarious Mobley, 20, and Xavier Thompson, 19, were arrested and faced charges related to their involvement, including accessory to a felony. Prosecutors stated that Miller had sought revenge after the earlier fight and, with assistance, obtained a gun. In a tragic mistake, Hart became the unintended victim of this quest for vengeance.
Ultimately, Quinterius Miller pleaded guilty to the murder of Anthony Hart. In January 2017, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the senseless killing. His accomplices also faced legal consequences for their roles in the events leading to Hart's death. Xavier Thompson pleaded guilty to accessory to murder after the fact, and Faubion Mobley pleaded guilty to related charges. The case left the community and Hart's family mourning the loss of a man described as a hero who was tragically killed by the person he had helped.
