In the early morning hours of June 29, 2022, tragedy struck at a gas station on Dorchester Road in North Charleston, South Carolina, forever altering the lives of those connected to 17-year-old Charrod Phillips. A Black male, Phillips was at the Cheapway gas station when the unimaginable unfolded. Shortly after 3:30 a.m., North Charleston Police responded to reports of a possible shooting at the location.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Charrod Phillips suffering from a gunshot
wound. Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency medical personnel, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:44 a.m. The Charleston County Coroner's Office would later confirm that Phillips died as a result of the gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Javeon Campbell as the suspect. In a brazen act of violence, Campbell entered the gas station, approached Phillips, and shot him in the back three times at close range. In 2023, through the combined efforts of the North Charleston Police Department and the U.S. Marshals, Javeon Campbell was taken into custody.
Justice for Charrod Phillips saw its day in court. After a three-day trial, a jury found Javeon Campbell guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Following the conviction, the 22-year-old was sentenced to life in prison for the senseless killing of the teenager.
