In a tragic turn of events on August 15, 2016, a simple act of kindness cost a North Charleston, South Carolina man his life. Chadwick Garrett, a 45-year-old male, was shot and killed after stopping to help two teenagers whose SUV was stuck in a ditch near Durant Avenue and North Jimtown Drive.
Garrett, known for his willingness to help others, had agreed to use his truck to pull the teens' Dodge Durango out of the ditch for an agreed-upon price of $20.
After successfully freeing the vehicle, Garrett inquired about the payment. It was at this moment that the situation escalated with deadly consequences. One of the teenagers, 17-year-old Deon Frasier, produced a firearm and shot Garrett multiple times in the chest.
Following the shooting, Frasier and his 19-year-old accomplice, Michael Dupree-Tyler, fled the scene in the SUV. A witness to the incident provided a description of the vehicle to law enforcement. A short time later, a woman reported to police that her SUV had been taken without her permission by the two teens, which helped authorities track them to an apartment complex on Dorchester Road. After a brief standoff, both Frasier and Dupree-Tyler were taken into custody.
During the subsequent investigation, both suspects confessed to their roles in the crime. Deon Frasier and Michael Dupree-Tyler were both charged with murder. Frasier also faced an additional charge for possession of a weapon during a violent crime. At a bond hearing, where both were denied bond, Garrett's father addressed the two teens, calling them 'cowards' for their actions.
