In the early morning hours of July 10, 2022, a domestic dispute in the New Friarsgate subdivision of Irmo, South Carolina, ended in the shooting death of 21-year-old Ryan T. Shull. A male, Shull was a resident of West Columbia. The incident was reported to the Irmo Police Department at approximately 1:30 a.m., who responded to a residence on Shawn Bay Road. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Shull with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite life-saving measures being administered at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to the Irmo Police Department, the shooting was an isolated event and described as 'domestic-related,' with officials assuring the public that there was no ongoing threat. Investigators reported that Shull had broken into the home and confronted the homeowner, who was sleeping at the time. In what was described as an act of self-defense, the homeowner used a firearm, which resulted in Shull's death. It was also stated by law enforcement that all individuals involved in the incident were acquainted with one another.
In the wake of the shooting, no arrests were made. The authorities have indicated that they are considering South Carolina's 'Castle Doctrine,' a 'stand your ground' law, in their investigation. The Irmo Police Department, in conjunction with the Richland County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. All findings from their investigation will be handed over to the Solicitor's Office, which will make the final determination on whether any charges will be filed.
Ryan Todd Shull was born on January 31, 2001, and was a 2019 graduate of Airport High School. He worked as a journeyman electrician for Spratlin Electric Contracting and was an active member of the Greater Columbia Youth Bowling League. Remembered as a lover of animals, especially his dog, Maddie, he was a member of the Green Hill Baptist Church. His funeral service was held on July 13, 2022, at Green Hill Baptist Church, with his burial following at Southland Memorial Gardens.
