In what should have been a peaceful afternoon in an Irmo, South Carolina neighborhood, a dispute between neighbors escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving a young man dead. James Ryan Outland, a 22-year-old White / Caucasian male, was shot and killed on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, in the cul-de-sac of Hedgefield Court. The incident, which stemmed from an ongoing conflict with a neighbor, brought a tragic end to the life of a man remembered by his loved ones as a loving husband and son with a
big heart.
The confrontation that led to Outland's death reportedly began when his wife was confronted by their 46-year-old neighbor, Charmika Wright. Feeling threatened, she contacted her husband, who then returned home. An altercation ensued as Outland attempted to prevent Wright from entering his property. It was during this confrontation that Wright allegedly shot Outland in the upper body. Deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene around 3 p.m. to find Outland with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
Following the shooting, Charmika Wright was detained at the scene and subsequently arrested. She has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. During a bond hearing, Wright's attorney suggested that she acted in self-defense, claiming she was in her own yard and had previously filed complaints about Outland's behavior. However, the Richland County Sheriff's Department stated that the evidence did not support a justifiable shooting. Wright was denied bail and is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center pending her next court appearance.
