In the late afternoon of Wednesday, February 19, 2020, emergency services in Irmo, South Carolina, responded to a call on Old Dutch Fork Road. There, they discovered 18-year-old Corey E. Hunt inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to his head. Paramedics transported the Chapin resident to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Richland County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death.
Corey, a junior at the Academy for Success, was remembered for his vibrant personality and love for music. He was an active young man who had previously been a wrestler and football player at Chapin High School. His passion for creating music led him to write and sing his own songs. Friends and family recalled his infectious smile and charismatic nature, which left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
The Irmo Police Department, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, conducted an investigation into the shooting. Several other individuals were present in the vehicle with Corey at the time of the incident, and they cooperated with the authorities. Despite the ongoing investigation, the Richland County Coroner stated that there were no initial indications of foul play in Corey's death. As of the initial reports, no arrests were made, and police were not actively seeking any suspects in connection with the shooting. The case remained under investigation by local and state authorities.
