Patrolman Claude Brice of the Joplin Police Department was tragically killed on December 31, 1904, while investigating a burglary. On that fateful night, Brice received information about a planned burglary at a business located on Main Street. Acting on this tip, he went to the location and observed three suspicious men. As he began to chase them along Main Street, one of the men opened fire, fatally wounding Brice near the intersection of Main Street and Second Street.
