In the early hours of a Sunday morning, a gathering of people in a Kansas City park turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 29-year-old Roberto E. Mejia of Kansas City, Kan. The group was near 8th and Jefferson streets, where the atmosphere was described as a party with people drinking, when an unknown gunman approached and began shooting just before 4 a.m.
Mejia was struck in the head by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
A second individual was also wounded in the incident, suffering a gunshot to the hand. Witnesses reported that the shooter fled the scene, running south after the attack. At the time, Mejia's death marked the 40th homicide in the city for that year.
Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. The investigation into the death of Roberto E. Mejia is ongoing, and police have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person responsible.
