On the night of August 10, 2014, tragedy struck in the Marine Villa neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, when 50-year-old Kelvin Dawson was fatally shot inside a residence. Known affectionately to friends and family as 'Big Mike' or 'Brown,' Dawson was a resident of St. Louis who was remembered as a 'Jack of all Trades' with a particular talent for automobile repair and cooking.
He had been spending time with friends at a home in the 3600 block of Salena Street when the violent encounter occurred.
Around 10:30 p.m., an intruder entered the dwelling and opened fire, striking Dawson multiple times in the upper torso. Police officers responding to the scene discovered the wounded man and arranged for his transport to a local hospital. Despite emergency medical efforts, Dawson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The incident, which disrupted the quiet of the Sunday evening, immediately launched a homicide investigation by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Months later, authorities made a significant breakthrough in the case. On October 27, 2014, prosecutors charged 36-year-old Shawn Morgan in connection with the killing. Morgan was taken into custody and faced serious allegations, including first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and two counts of armed criminal action. Following his arrest, a judge ordered him to be held without bond as he awaited legal proceedings for the home invasion and subsequent shooting that claimed Dawson's life.
