On October 14, 2014, a tragic domestic dispute unfolded at a residence near Golden City, Missouri, in the Lockwood area. Law enforcement officials were dispatched to the home after reports of a shooting involving 59-year-old female Sherry Arlene Fury. Upon arrival, Dade County deputies discovered that Sherry had sustained a severe gunshot wound to the head. The incident reportedly began as an argument between Sherry and her son, Jason William Fury. According to statements given to investigators, the altercation escalated until Jason retrieved a handgun from his truck and fired a single shot at his mother.
Following the shooting, Jason Fury remained at the scene and was taken into custody by the Dade County Sheriff's Office. During questioning, he allegedly told authorities that he remembered retrieving the weapon but claimed to have 'blacked out' during the actual shooting, only regaining awareness when his father, who was also present at the property, instructed him to call 911. Sherry was treated at the scene and subsequently rushed to Cox South Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri, where she remained in critical condition for several days.

In the wake of her death, the charges against Jason Fury were upgraded from first-degree domestic assault to first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
