In May of 2015, a domestic dispute in Kansas City, Missouri, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 25-year-old Deontay Campbell. The young man was discovered inside a sport utility vehicle near Bristol Terrace and Longview Road, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred around 1:00 p.m. on a Sunday, was not a random act of violence but one rooted in a soured romantic relationship.
The investigation into Campbell's death quickly centered on his
ex-girlfriend, 26-year-old Lauren Littlejohn. According to accounts, Campbell had gone to Littlejohn's residence where an argument ensued. Initially, Littlejohn attempted to mislead investigators, claiming that Campbell had taken her handgun and shot himself. However, the evidence at the scene and the subsequent police investigation began to unravel her story. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise and seeing Littlejohn in her driveway. Investigators also discovered shattered glass on the street that had not been there prior to the incident.
A pivotal moment in the investigation came with the discovery of the weapon. After obtaining consent to search her home, police found a. 380-caliber handgun concealed beneath the sheets on a bed. The medical examiner's findings also contradicted Littlejohn's initial statement, ruling the death a homicide and noting that the fatal shot was fired from a distance of more than three feet.
