In the early morning hours of April 6, 2018, the quiet of a Kansas City neighborhood was broken by the sound of a single gunshot. Inside a vacant building in the 2100 block of East Linwood Boulevard, a 50-year-old man named Dwayne Thomas lay dying from a fatal wound. The chain of events that led to this tragic conclusion began when another man inside the building called 911, claiming he had shot an intruder.
