On July 3, 2015, authorities in rural Buchanan County, near St. Joseph, Missouri, began investigating the double homicide of a married couple found dead in their home. The victims were identified as 72-year-old James Aunon Johnson and his 76-year-old wife, Beverly Ann 'Betty' Johnson. Law enforcement discovered the couple had been fatally shot inside their residence. James Johnson had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of the head, while his wife had been shot in the temple.
The bodies were located on Independence Day, leading to a swift investigation by the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office.
Police quickly identified a suspect, the couple's 16-year-old grandson, Joseph Johnson, who lived with them and whom they had adopted. Hours after the killings, officers apprehended the teenager during a traffic stop in Platte County, Missouri. At the time of his arrest, authorities found him in possession of approximately $600, a credit card belonging to his grandparents, and written directions to Louisville, Kentucky. He was taken into custody and initially charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder, though the charges were later amended.
During the legal proceedings, details emerged regarding the motive and circumstances of the shooting. The teenager, who had been homeschooled, told the court that he had mistaken his grandparents' discipline for abuse. He admitted to using two pistols during the attack, firing a shot that missed before fatally striking his grandmother with a weapon belonging to his grandfather, and then turning the gun on James Johnson. In court, he characterized his own actions as those of a 'spoiled and stupid' child. In December 2015, he pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. The following year, he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison. In a strange postscript to the tragedy, the home where the murders occurred was destroyed by a fire in January 2016 while the property was unoccupied.
