On Sunday, October 27, 2024, a violent incident unfolded at a residence in St. Joseph, Missouri, claiming the life of 30-year-old Melchizedek Judah 'Mel' Fitzgerald, a Black male. Officers from the St. Joseph Police Department were dispatched to the home located at 2218 South 14th Street shortly before 3:00 p.m. regarding a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the scene, first responders discovered Fitzgerald inside the residence, where he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a tragic end for the man who was a resident of the home where the violence took place.
The shooting left two other individuals critically injured, turning the residence into a chaotic crime scene. Authorities identified the surviving victims as two 20-year-old men, one hailing from Johnson County, Kansas, and the other from Atchison, Kansas. The Johnson County man suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in the Kansas City area for urgent medical intervention. The second wounded man was transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Investigators immediately began processing the scene to determine the sequence of events that led to the gunfire. In the aftermath of the shooting, the St. Joseph Police Department released a statement indicating that there was no evidence suggesting the involvement of any additional subjects outside of those found at the residence. The police maintained that the inquiry was ongoing as they worked to piece together the circumstances surrounding the dispute.
Fitzgerald was remembered by those who knew him as a man with a deep passion for the arts, music, and travel. Born in Fort Riley, Kansas, he spent much of his youth in a military family, eventually graduating from John Hardin High School in Radcliff, Kentucky. He was a husband and a father to two children, Amiyah and Zion, and was known for his support of his siblings and extended family. Following his death, his body was returned to Kentucky, where funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, and he was laid to rest at North Hardin Memorial Gardens.
