On June 15, 2023, 15-year-old Carter Paul Smith was found deceased near the REC Center at 28th and Commercial Streets in Saint Joseph, Missouri. An investigation led to the arrest of 17-year-old Kaden Wilfong, who was charged with second-degree murder. Evidence against Wilfong included video footage, data from Smith's phone, and items recovered from Wilfong's residence, such as firearms and blood-stained clothing.
