On August 6, 2018, a violent sequence of events unfolded just north of downtown Saint Joseph, Missouri, shattering the summer quiet and ultimately claiming a life. Emergency responders were called to the scene of a vehicle crash in the 1000 block of Henry Street, but what appeared to be a traffic accident quickly revealed itself as a crime scene. Inside the wrecked vehicle, authorities discovered two victims who had been subjected to gunfire. Among them was Mack D.
Jenkins, a 29-year-old Black male, who had sustained critical injuries in the attack. Despite the efforts to save him, Jenkins succumbed to his wounds, turning the inquiry into a homicide investigation.
The second occupant of the vehicle, Deon Hernandez, survived the shooting but suffered life-altering consequences. Hernandez, who was 23 at the time, was left paralyzed as a result of the gunfire. Investigators worked to piece together the moments leading up to the crash, determining that the victims were targeted while inside the car. Witnesses provided crucial accounts, reporting that a gunman had fired shots into the vehicle before fleeing the area. This testimony helped police identify a suspect, leading to a manhunt for the individual responsible for the deadly ambush.
Police focused their efforts on Jessie Lee Nelson, a St. Joseph resident, identifying him as the shooter. Nelson was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder for the death of Jenkins, as well as first-degree assault for the injuries inflicted upon Hernandez. Additionally, Nelson faced charges of armed criminal action, reflecting the severity of the violence. Following his arrest, the legal process moved forward with a mental evaluation, after which Nelson was deemed competent to stand trial. He entered a plea of not guilty, and the case proceeded to a courtroom in Buchanan County.
During the trial in November 2019, jurors heard testimony regarding the shooting and the events that transpired on that August day. The prosecution presented evidence linking Nelson to the crime, and after deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all counts. The judicial proceedings concluded on January 28, 2020, when the court handed down a severe penalty. Jessie Lee Nelson was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison, with an additional 100 years added to his sentence, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the murder of Mack Jenkins and the paralysis of Deon Hernandez.
